Fossil Dig

In Science, Mrs. Rightweiser's 4th grader students are studying the effects of the changing of our landscape over time by looking at rock formations and fossils. One of the experiment that the classes did was a Fossil dig.

Their job was to excavate the fossils (chocolate chips) from the rock (cookie) that the fossils are embedded in.  Students used their excavation tools (toothpick, tooth brush, paint brush, and magnifying glass) to help dig up fossils. The challenge, just as it is for a paleontologist, is that they had to leave the rock (cookie) in one place the entire time because paleontologists can't move giant rocks around in real life. The 4th graders had so much fun with this experiment. However, they were challenged with the fact that they could not eat their fossils.
