PROVIDING A RESOURCE FOR OUR PARENTS

I firmly believe that partnering with parents is critically important to supporting the success of our students and that belief has only deepened in the last few months.  When the statewide school closure began in March, all of us – but especially parents – were called upon to do things we never imagined.  In addition to dealing with health and financial concerns and adjustments, parents also had to become teachers. There is no more important profession than teaching, but parents were thrown in with little time to plan or prepare.

While this shift came with challenges, D187’s parents rose to the occasion and continue to do so.  They rearranged kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms into classrooms, picked up learning packets and used them to teach their children, and learned how to use online learning platforms.  In a word, our parents are amazing, and along with the rest of the district,  I couldn’t be more grateful for their partnership and hard work.

The school closure also posed challenges for our teachers, staff, and administrators and, as a result, we witnessed what the tremendous professionals in this district are made of.  They worked long hours to quickly pivot to remote learning.  They too had to learn how to use online learning platforms and also how to create meaningful learning in these very different “classrooms.”  D187 professionals also had to make sure our students and families were supported through these unprecedented times – putting together and delivering meals, making house calls to set up Chromebooks and hotspots, and developing more and better ways to support social emotional needs.  I am incredibly proud of and thankful for all of my D187 colleagues.

As the district responded to the flood of challenges and changes, we constantly asked ourselves, “How can we go beyond a quick band aid approach and use this as an opportunity to go above and beyond?”  One part of our answer was to create a Parent Resource Center (PRC).

The PRC is located at the high school and our vision is to provide a one-stop-shop for parents looking for information, support, personal growth, and leadership development opportunities.  D187 has developed this physical space to serve as a foundation for our partnership with families.

Currently, the PRC is focusing on technology support because families are requesting help with Chromebooks, educational platforms, and other learning technology questions.  The PRC is open on Mondays from 1:00-7:00 pm, offering afternoon and evening hours to accommodate families’ schedules.  Planning for a leadership development program for families is underway which will begin in the new year.

D187 will be conducting surveys and gathering information to better understand and address families’ interests and needs.   The more we hear and learn from families, the more the PRC’s hours and offerings will grow.

The PRC is run by Ebony Wilson, D187’s Family/Community Liaison and Director of the Parent Resource Center.  Ebony brings with her lifelong knowledge and connection to the North Chicago community and a deep commitment to D187 – she is a graduate of NCCHS and has worked in the district for more than 20 years.  Her passion and dedication for supporting and working with families is rivaled only by her incredible ability to get things done.

The PRC is just one example of how D187 is using the current challenging times to go beyond simply addressing the issue in front of us and instead to think big and ask ourselves, “How do we accelerate our work and support systemic needs?”  D187 values our partnership with families and will continue to listen, learn, and better support that relationship.  Please let Ebony and others in the district know what you want and need.  We’re here to help!

Sincerely,

John P. Price, Superintendent District 187

Sinceremente,

John P. Price, Superintendente D187
